Huawei and Samsung’s Foldable Smartphone

A thorough comparison of their features as well as the pros and cons of them.(with facts other articles didn’t mention)

The Chinese Telecommunication company Huawei, has released a foldable smartphone (Mate X) in February, almost identical to Samsung’s foldable smartphone, the Samsung Fold.

The Samsung Fold consists of an Octa Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, with 6 cameras and 12GB of RAM(Random Access Memory), a storage used to hold data.The phone is quite thick and chunky and it only uses the center of the screen when folded. According to Business Insider, when the Samsung Fold, when folded, measures 4.6 inches, and 7.3 inches when unfolded.

Samsung’s foldable phone also features a different screen side for phone mode and the full screen mode. The Samsung Fold also has a notch on the screen when folded out. The Samsung Fold version currently out is the 4G version. According to, Korea can expect the 5G version as soon as May and to cost more than the 4G version which is $1980.

Huawei Mate X

The Huawei Mate X consists of a 40mp wide angle lens and possesses a 55w fast charging capability. It features an edge to edge dual screen display with 5G connection, also created by Huawei. It consists of a stretchable hinge allows the device to have a smooth flat finish on both sides of the phone. Its durable design prevents the screen from stretching or bulging while folding or unfolding. The Mate X’s wide OLED display screen allows for a broader and enriched view.

When unfolded, the Mate X brings freedom to your eyes by transforming into an 8" tablet ². Its dimensions are perfect for browsing your feed on social media, playing video games, watching videos, handling files etc. In Split Screen mode, there is limitless multitasking proficiency.

A dual sim allows for access to 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G cellular network technology around the globe. A Leica camera system is featured in its compact hand-held bar which also creates a comfortable grip in addition to the slim body of the phone. An uninterrupted 5G signal is created by the futuristic Interstellar blue material on the back of the device. The dual screen display enables the photographer and subject to preview their photograph shot in real life on both sides of the phone.

The Mate X combines the fingerprint reader with the power switch in one button.The phone also has the ability of a speedy charge with 85% in 30 minutes.

Differences between the Samsung Fold and Huawei Mate X

Unlike the Fold, the Huawei Mate X has its screen on the outside. This makes the Mate X more vulnerable to damage while the Fold’s screen is hidden on the inside. Huawei’s foldable phone keeps the phone screen and tablet screen on the same side of the device whereas Samsung’s has a separate screen for both. In total, the Samsung Fold has 6 cameras. In terms of the price, Samsung’s phone can start at around $2000 while Huawei’s phone can be up to $2600.

The Mate X is thinner than the Fold as we can see in the first picture of this article. In this way, the Mate X appears more futuristic and has more of a cleaner finish than the Samsung Fold. Huawei’s phone also has an edge to edge display while Samsung’s phone centers its display leaving black space on the edges. The Huawei Mate X also has a handle for a more proportional screen in comparison to the long and narrow Fold phone screen. Unlike the Fold, the Mate X also doesn’t have a notch on the screen when folded out. The Mate X also has a 4500 milliampere battery while the Fold has a 4380 milliampere battery.
